The famous Swedish-born American artist Claes Oldenburg has died at the age of 93. Best known for his over-sized outdoor sculptures of everyday objects like garden hoses, ice cream cones, shuttlecocks, and binoculars, the pop artist made the mundane massive.
The artist’s daughter Maartje Oldenburg said he had been unwell since falling and breaking his hip a month ago. Claes Oldenburg died in Manhattan, New York, U.S.A on the 18th of July, 2022.
He produced many of his giant sculptures with his wife Coosje van Bruggen who died in 2009.

Claes Oldenburg’s most recent public sculpture is a giant blue gardening spade (Plantoir, Blue 2001–21) at the Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens in New York City, New York. It was also a collaboration with his wife who was credited posthumously for the creation of the monumental work.
