Russell “Tas” Drysdale was a famous Australian painter and draughtsman. He is best known for his sun burnt images of Australian rural and outback life. Famous Russel Drysdale artworks include “Sunday Evening”, “Sofala”, “Portrait of Donald Friend”, “Desert Landscape”, “Mangula”, “Shopping Day”, “The Drover’s Wife”, “Moody’s Pub”, “Walls of China”, “Aboriginal Stockmen”, “The Rabbiters”, “The Cricketers” and “The Fossicker”.
Mini biography: Born George Russell Drysdale on the 7th of February, 1912 in Bognor Regis, Sussex, England. His mother was Isobel Gates and his father George Russell Drysdale was a wealthy pastoralist. Drysdale married Elizabeth ‘Bon’ Stephen in 1935 and they had two children together: Son Tim and daughter Lynne. Tragically his son committed suicide at just 21 years of age and his wife did the same a year later. He married his second wife Maisie Purves Smith in 1964. The artist died on the 29th of June, 1981 in Sydney, Australia at the age of 69. Russell Drysdale is buried at the St Paul’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Kincumber, Central Coast Council, New South Wales, Australia.
